After several years of searching for the ideal location my wife Terri and I found the perfect spot in north Midhurst for us and our two boys Ryan and Owen to live, grow, and play. With the support of our family and friends we were incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to build our own home in such an amazing community, and look forward to living in Ward 3 for many years.
I joined the fire service started as a volunteer in 1997 to support my local community prior to starting my professional career as a firefighter in 2000. I was promoted through the ranks from Firefighter, Officer, Deputy Chief and then into my current position of Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Service for a large urban municipality.
My professional career overseeing a large workforce and a multi-million dollar budget in a growing and evolving municipality has provided me a tremendous amount of experience that will support my role as a municipal councillor. I have the ability to make sound decisions that support individuals and my community in challenging and complex situations. I also bring a business approach of being fiscally responsible to the taxpayer while providing sustainable essential services to our community. I am very humbled and proud to lead an amazing team of fire service professionals who provide exceptional services to the community.
During the summer months our family enjoys spending time on the water, and in the winter season exploring our local snowmobile trails.
As a parent of two hockey players I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend many years coaching competitive hockey. My coaching philosophy has always been to teach players to love the game, work hard to support your teammates, and have fun. My time coaching and mentoring our players has always been a tremendous area of pride and accomplishment I look forward to each season.
I am excited to have the opportunity to serve as your municipal councillor and use my knowledge, skills and experience to improve the community we call home.
Council needs to focus on managing the unprecedented number of approved and proposed developments in the township and work with the developers to minimize the disruption to our current residents, and maintain the character of our community for our new neighbours. Early collaboration and effective negotiations will support growth our community can be proud of.
Council needs to ensure access to parks and recreation opportunities are improved so all our residents can easily enjoy an active lifestyle. Communities that prioritize parks and recreation create opportunity for people to gather, and engage with their neighbours. Neighbourhoods that have local access to parks and recreation are sought after, have higher home values, and create a sense of community belonging.
Historically municipalities have had to play catch up for years to support the needs of residents after periods of growth and development resulting in areas being under serviced, congested, and unsafe. Council needs to create strong policies and budgets to ensure the community is “resident ready” faster. Access to better roads, emergency services, and community services needs to be aligned with current growth and development, not years later.
Council must work to ensure the budget meets the needs of the community to support the operational and capital costs required to deliver both essential and non essential services. Our residents work hard for their money, and we should be accountable and transparent with how it is spent.
